Slowing Down with the Season: The Leadership Skill We Often Overlook

As autumn settles in, I’m reminded that nature never hurries, yet everything gets done. The trees release what no longer serves them. The air cools, inviting stillness. The pace naturally slows. And in that slowing, there is wisdom.

In the corporate world, however, “slowing down” often feels like failure. We’re taught to push harder, move faster, and fill every moment with activity. But as a Mindfulness Coach and former management consultant, I’ve seen firsthand how constant acceleration can quietly erode focus, creativity, and wellbeing, not just for individuals, but across entire organizations.

After years in fast-paced environments, I learned that rest is not a reward, it’s a requirement for sustainable performance. The most effective leaders and teams are not the ones who never stop, but the ones who know when to pause, what to release, and how to create space for renewal.

Just as trees let go of their leaves to prepare for new growth, we too can benefit from asking ourselves:

-What projects, habits, or thought patterns am I ready to release?

- Where can my team slow down to reflect rather than react?

- How can our organization create space for genuine restoration and not just another “wellbeing initiative,” but a cultural shift toward balance?

In mindfulness, we talk about “the power of the pause”; the ability to step back, breathe, and respond with clarity instead of reactivity. Fall is a perfect metaphor for that pause: it’s the season that reminds us that letting go is not losing, it’s preparing for what’s next.

As leaders and professionals, embracing this rhythm isn’t just good for our wellbeing; it’s good for business. When people are well, they think better, connect better, and lead better.

So as the season turns, I invite you to consider:

What would happen if your team, or your organization aligned more with nature’s wisdom and less with constant speed?

What is the relationship between mindfulness and eating habits?

Mindfulness is our ability to remain present in the moment we are in and be aware of what is happening around us (external environment and stimuli) and what is happening within us (emotional state, feelings, body sensations and physical cues). WHAT IS MINDFULNESS?

Nowadays, due to the fast paced and information overload environment we live in, most of us operate under what we call the “autopilot mode”. It is a state in which we have a vague awareness of what is happening in the present moment, we are hardly aware of what is occurring around us (sounds, sights, smells, etc.) and what is occurring within us (physical, mental and emotional sensations). We do things without much thought, we behave in a mechanical way and we do so without awareness! This is what we call the "autopilot mode" and "Mindfulness" is the exact opposite of that!
